Project Update

The vast majority of construction work from Nursery Street up to Weedon Street is now complete. Ongoing works currently include two sections at Forgemasters, some finishing works around Brightside Bridge, and hand railings to be completed at the Hargreaves site close to Newhall Road.

The big piece of work still underway is along Meadowhall Road. All piling works are now complete and work to construct reinforced concrete bases and walls is ongoing. The flood defence wall has already been constructed in many sections and bricklaying to clad the concrete wall is well underway.

The existing traffic management arrangements will remain in place until late October at which point they will be reduced to reopen the third lane of traffic near the Transport Interchange. Hadfield Bridge remains closed due to the ongoing works but will be re-opened by late October.

The River Stewardship Company (RSC) has almost finished Phase 1 of the invasive species programme.  There is a small area of river bank left to complete at Meadowhall before the team makes its way back to the upstream limit to work downstream again for Phase 2. As well as treating regrowth of Giant hogweed and Himalayan balsam in Phase 2, Japanese knotweed will also be treated. The RSC has seen a general decrease in the distribution of Giant hogweed and Japanese knotweed compared to previous years thanks to the treatment carried out over the past two years through the channel maintenance programme, but Himalayan balsam seems to be rife.

Our regular volunteer days have been well-attended by both corporate groups and casual volunteers and continue to be scheduled weekly.
