Project Update

An event was held on the 25th January to celebrate completion of the construction phase of the flood defence project.

Sir James Bevan (Chief Executive of the Environment Agency), Cllr Julie Dore (Leader of Sheffield City Council), and Richard Wright (Executive Director of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce), all delivered speeches at the event which attracted a strong media presence from numerous outlets including BBC Look North, ITV Calendar, BBC Radio Sheffield, Sheffield Live, Sheffield Star and the Yorkshire Post among others.

Representatives from organisations involved in delivering the scheme from design right through to delivery were in attendance alongside representatives from BID levy paying organisations in the Lower Don Valley.

The event, hosted by Gripple, provided an opportunity to thank the business community for their financial support towards the project through the BID as well as for their patience during the construction phase.

A continuous line of flood defences is now in place from the Wicker to J34 of the M1 providing a significantly improved standard of defence to the Lower Don Valley. As is to be expected with a project of this type and scale, some small pieces of snagging work and remediation need to be carried out and Sheffield City Council will ensure that this work is completed as quickly as possible.

Although the construction phase is complete, the project has over a year left to run, through to the end of the BID in June 2019. River channel maintenance work is integral to maintaining the standard of the flood defences and work will continue as it has done over the past 3 and a half years to keep the river free from debris, to manage trees which present a flood risk, to manage overgrown vegetation and to treat invasive species which can undermine the structure of river banks and flood defences.

This week’s volunteer day was held along the river at Nursery Street where the team cleared the large amount of debris left behind on the riverbank by the recent high waters. Volunteer sessions will continue to run every Tuesday and new volunteers are always welcome. please get in touch with the River Stewardship Company for more information.
